Year Up protects and preserves mission-critical student data with Own

Year Up is a non-profit with a mission: close the Opportunity Divide, the gap between young adults with low-income backgrounds and career and higher education opportunities. To close this gap, Year Up empowers young adults to earn the skills, experiences and support they need to reach their full potential.

To date, Year Up has served over 34,000 students across 35 campuses in the United States, with 80% of new graduates securing a career or moving onto post-secondary education. This volume of students served, and their outcomes give Year Up the data they need to support their mission.

Their latest results, measured through a rigorous Randomized Control Trial (RCT), the “gold standard” of studies, showed that participants across all subgroups saw a 30-40 percent increase in earnings, or about $8,000, four years after graduation. A conservative cost-benefit analysis found that every $1.00 spent on Year Up results in a gain to society of $1.66.

Year Up stores and manages all student data in Salesforce, allowing Year Up to track students’ progress, evaluations, timesheets and attendance without the risk of incurring data gaps that come from working across multiple systems. Since Salesforce is the non-profit’s single student database, this vital and sensitive information is not something they can afford to lose.

Additionally, Year Up uses Own Archive to archive historical data from Salesforce. This enables the organization to retain data for compliance purposes while maintaining access to more timely and relevant data within Salesforce.

For example, data from a student who graduated 10 years ago is less critical than a student who is currently attending. By archiving older data, Year Up can easily find the information they need and devote resources where they’re needed. Archiving also mitigates storage costs within Salesforce by offloading older data into archives.

Challenges

  • Improve efficiency by increasing focus towards automation as Year Up scales

  • Back up mission-critical data, which sometimes inadvertently gets deleted

  • Implement a solution that’s intuitive and quick to onboard

Solutions

  • Year Up has peace of mind and complete confidence that data disasters aren’t going to significantly affect their organization or the students they serve

  • With Archive, Year Up saves on storage space by archiving older data and focusing on newer, more relevant data.

Since using Own, Year Up has been able to restore deleted data quickly and painlessly.

Combined with a seamless process, an easy-to-use interface, and the capabilities to archive historical data, Year Up can worry less about data loss and focus on what’s most important: ensuring that every young person receives equitable access to economic opportunity, education, and justice—no matter their background, income, or zip code.

About YearUp

Year Up's mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by ensuring that young adults gain the skills, experiences, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through careers and higher education.

Year Up is committed to ensuring equitable access to economic opportunity, education, and justice for all young adults—no matter their background, income, or zip code. Employers face a growing need for talent while millions are left disconnected from the economic mainstream. These inequities only further perpetuate the Opportunity Divide that exists in our country—a divide that Year Up is determined and positioned to close.

In addition to driving impact through direct service and strategic partnerships with employers, talent providers, and policymakers, Year Up is committed to addressing the root causes of the Opportunity Divide in this country and creating pathways to opportunity at broad scale. Helping to power the opportunity movement and make this work possible are two essential partnerships with Grads of Life and YUPRO.

Year Up has served more than 34,000 young adults across the United States since its founding in 2000 and has been voted one of the “Best Non-Profits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times.

There are major security breaches in the news on a weekly basis, and they keep getting worse. Knowing our core data is backed up, off system, to a third party reduces the risk of a total loss that would impact our business significantly.

I am hopeful we'll build a country that sees the potential inherent in all our young people, not just the ones born in the 'right' zip codes.
