OwnBackup Drives Exponential Global Expansion with New Canadian Data Center Option

August 8, 2018

OwnBackup, a leading Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) data protection vendor, today announced the expansion of their global footprint to now include Canada. This addition demonstrates an even stronger commitment to enhanced Canadian customer privacy and regulatory compliance allowing customers the option to store and process their data completely within Canada.

“Driven by strong Canadian customer demand, this latest addition to our global data center options will significantly expand our Canadian business opportunities and our mission to ensure that no company operating in the cloud will ever lose data.” said Sam Gutmann, CEO of OwnBackup.

“OwnBackup's expansion into Canada allows many of our fellow Canadian organizations with data residency, compliance concerns, or public awareness concerns to enjoy a complete data protection solution, while remaining compliant with constantly changing data privacy needs,” said Jose Molitor, Project Manager of Canada Drives. “With OwnBackup, we have been able to optimize our Salesforce data administration and development processes. Furthermore, OwnBackup Sandbox Seeding has helped us optimize our sandboxes, helping fuel our exponential growth.”

OwnBackup's new Canadian data center option enables its customers, even those with the strictest requirements, such as public sector organizations, to better meet data residency requirements and gain data privacy regulation compliance.

Private Sector Canada Data Privacy Regulations

  • The federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) requires organizations to provide similar notice and to ensure that personal information that is in the hands of a third party, inside Canada or elsewhere, receives a “comparable level of protection” to that provided by the organization itself.
  • S. 13.1 of Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act requires organizations to provide notice of certain transfers of personal information outside of Canada.

Public Sector Canada Data Privacy Regulations

  • 30.1 of BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act requires all personal information to be stored and accessed in Canada, subject to an extensive list of exceptions.
  • Nova Scotia’s Personal Information International Disclosure Protection Act imposes similar requirements, again subject to certain exceptions.
  • S. 50(1) of Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 prohibits the disclosure of personal information outside of Ontario unless the affected individual consents or certain other conditions are met.
