When you think of all the reasons to back up your data, analytics or compliance probably aren’t the first things that come to mind. In reality though, data backups can help with both, in addition to helping with business continuity or disaster recovery.

In order to enable a complete recovery, backup files must have data that is complete (relationships intact), and provide time-specific snapshots, attributes that make the data valuable for other applications and business processes as well. To help customers take advantage of the copies of the data in backup files, OwnBackup’s export functionality provides a way to get data out of backups and into other endpoints or destinations, like databases or data warehouses.

Below, we outline some of the top use cases for exporting your backups, and explain how OwnBackup helps to facilitate this process.

Use cases for exporting backups

To create a full, independent copy of your data

Whether to fulfill a compliance requirement or merely for their own peace of mind, many customers request to have a copy of their data that’s in their own controlled cloud environment, like AWS cloud storage. This way, they have a copy of their data that’s available to them no matter what happens to their relationship with a particular vendor. Exports provide a mechanism for creating these full, independent copies.

To meet compliance requirements

In some cases, the need to have a copy of your data is a mandated requirement. Regulations like FINRA Rule 4370 and SEC 17a-4 are stringent and require companies to have a copy of their backups in their own controlled storage to be available upon request. By being able to export your backups on demand, you can keep copies up to date automatically to meet specific governance and compliance requirements. Our Governance Plus solution was designed specifically for companies with enhanced compliance requirements, and can help financial services organizations meet requirements for electronic storage, record-keeping, and integrity of Salesforce records.

One of our customers, a national wealth and asset management firm, executes daily, scheduled exports of their full backups to their S3 bucket to help stay compliant with regulations that require them to have a copy of their backed-up data, easily accessible and searchable, in a controlled environment.

To gain insights through analytics

Another reason why you might need a complete copy of your data is for analytics. Many organizations use data lakes or data warehouses as the foundation for data analysis across multiple applications. Exports make backup files a great delivery mechanism for up-to-date and even time-series data to analytical warehouses and lakes. From there, you can use the data from your data warehouse to power Business Intelligence (BI) tools.

For example, one of our customers uses OwnBackup to export specific Salesforce objects to Snowflake, which get mixed with both financial and transactional data from their SQL on-prem servers. This data then gets pushed via API triggers and other ETL tools into Tableau for reporting and analytics.

Extract more value from your backups using OwnBackup

With OwnBackup Recover, you can run scheduled or on-demand exports of your backups to create full, independent copies and meet specific compliance requirements, all without using additional APIs from your SaaS application (Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics 365, or ServiceNow).

With scheduled exports, you get the benefit of automated, background refreshes of data in your copies and data warehouses, without the need to write any code or manual work. Using this feature, you’re able to create up to two scheduled data exports daily, leveraging the same endpoints and object selection capabilities available through OwnBackup’s on-demand, interactive export capability.

OwnBackup also gives you the ability to export data to various endpoints, including:

  • MySQL
  • SQL Endpoint
  • Amazon S3
  • Snowflake
  • Azure Blob

Users can also choose to download copies of their backups in SQL or CSV format and write scripts to automate those downloads to other warehouses or on prem locations. To learn more about OwnBackup’s export capabilities, visit our website or request a demo today.
