8 Critical Tools for Your Large Enterprise Salesforce Data Protection Strategy

If you are using Salesforce’s Weekly Export, you may want to consider the seven-step process you have to go through to recover if a data loss or corruption were to occur.

Not all data protection tools are created equal. Here are eight tools that contribute to a strong data protection strategy.

1) Enterprise-Robust Backup Tools

A true, enterprise-robust backup tool goes beyond a weekly snapshot or on-premise integration. Your backup tools should support large, complex environments that contain millions of records. 

What about your metadata? Without it, you will not be able to rebuild custom settings and relationships. Not to mention chatter feeds, knowledge articles, person accounts, orphaned records, sandboxes, and attachments and files. You should be able to backup your entire Org’s data and metadata daily to ensure the highest level of data protection for your Salesforce environments.

2) Export Data Tools

With very large data sets, some enterprises prefer to integrate with their SQL database in order to do more complex processing offline. They may also want export to SQL as another business continuity or data recovery option and to leverage BI and ETL tools.

3) Archiving Tools

Company archives can become unwieldy at lightning speed. This is where features that enable you to better manage your archived data, such as labels, a search capability that searches both objects and within attachments, filters, and being able to set customizable retention are all important to the large enterprise. 

Archiving data out of Salesforce to a data archive is an effective strategy to reduce complexity on Salesforce. This actually allows you to significantly streamline costs. It also helps keep your Salesforce environment lean and high performing by reducing complexity on your live environment.

4) Fine-Tuned Compliance Tools

Managing data for regulatory compliance is important for many reasons. Whether it’s Sarbanes Oxley-related in the US, for litigation holds, or for e-Discovery purposes…or even, as part of your HIPAA or GDPR compliance plan. Managing the data within the very large enterprise can be challenging. In some cases, such as HIPAA, you’re required to maintain data for long periods of time in case a data loss occurs. In others, such as GDPR, you are only allowed to keep data for the maximum time deemed necessary for your specific business purposes.

If you think you’ve never lost data, you may be surprised to find out that data loss happens more often than you’d think, especially to corporations with so many Salesforce users. Some of the ways data can get lost and corrupted include:

What the recovery time and recovery point end up being are deeply influenced by backup frequency, retention, your ability to compare current and past data, and to restore just the data that has been impacted.
